Climate Change

The recent video gone viral is of a starving polar bear that was filmed by photographer Paul Nicklen. The video is of a scary skinny polar bear who is walking across iceless land. The bears fur is dragging along with him because he has no muscle or meat on his bones to hold it up anymore. The video sent almost every viewer away crying, it was heart wrenching to watch. I think it is very often that animals like the bear just go unnoticed, we are too busy with our personal lives to realize that even though things in our home aren’t dying, all around the world they are.

The photographer in the National Geographic Magazine stated that he didn’t intervene and end the torture of this pure animal because, “But it’s not like I walk around with a tranquilizer gun or 400 pounds of seal meat.” The goal for even having this video was to show how badly the worlds climate is changing. Climate change has been a huge controversial topic over the last five or so years. It has become more popular and more known but this like many other things with the environment just seems to be a topic of discussion. As humans we are surrounded by the most beautiful thing, earth itself and all that it has to offer. We have to take action against the destruction that we have caused because this video is just of one struggling polar bear, there are hundreds in the same situation.

The struggling of the bear, starving literally to his death, is what we have done. We need to take the responsibility for killing these animals. If it weren’t for our toxic chemicals, burning fuels, and trashing our earths surface this bear would most likely be surviving happily on his own. According to National Geographic, “Polar bears have long been unwitting mascots for the effects of climate change. As animals that live only in Arctic regions, they’re often the first to feel the impacts of warming temperatures and rising seas.” It is a sad feeling knowing that this is just the beginning of climate change and this one bear is one compared to the millions of animals that will be effected or killed off from climate change.

Greenpeace is fighting specifically against global warming and to Save the Arctic. Greenpeace is highly knowledgeable about what the arctic is doing for our earth and how it works when it comes to global warming. They stated,

“Here’s how it works: Arctic sea ice keeps the planet cool by reflecting sunlight. As climate change takes hold and the world gets warmer, the ice is melting and the oceans are absorbing sunlight. This makes the planet even warmer, causing the ice to melt even faster.

As the Arctic ice melts, the oil under Arctic waters becomes an increasingly attractive target for the oil industry. That’s right — oil that was once out of reach because the Arctic was frozen is now accessible because of climate change. And the very companies responsible for climate change want more oil to make climate change worse.”

I really enjoy being able to learn from their perspective on how the arctic is helping with global warming. It is important to understand how the earth is working and how without the arctic and its ice the waters are rising and the world is becoming hotter.

Greenpeace’s main statement about global warming is one that is very memorable. It says, “The devastating impacts of climate change are clear. Our world is warmer than ever before, and people and wildlife are already suffering the consequences. But that’s nothing compared to what we’re leaving future generations if these trends continue. It’s time to stop the destruction. It’s time for an energy [r]evolution.” This powerful statement is so true and it seems so simple and easy to understand in the way that they say it. Their fight to help the animals, the earth, and climate change is really important to the future generations, their lives, and homes.
